Is Life Fair?

life“Life is not fair!” Have you ever heard that comment before? Have you ever  said that yourself? Is it normal to sometimes feel that way? I would dare to say  that very few people have never felt that  way. However, because we feel a certain way about something, does that mean it  is true?

Let us examine the key words in this statement, namely “life” and “fair”. We  glibly use the word “life” but do we understand what it really means? What is  life? Most people understand that to mean “my life”, that which I experience on  a daily basis, for which many blame circumstances outside of themselves. For  many, life happens to them, like an event that they have little or no control  over. Many experience a sense of helplessness, being a victim to life. However, “my life” or in a truer sense, my “life situation” or “life experience” is only  a part of the equation of what life really is.

It is important to understand that reality (that which is) consists of more  than one dimension. There are two dimensions to reality, making life dual  dimensional. Firstly there is objective reality, that which is outside  of myself, determined by immutable universal laws and principles, which in turn  are determined by God/Infinite Being/Universal Consciousness/Creative Energy or  whatever terminology you wish to use. I have no control over objective  reality but can only submit to and apply the universal laws and principles,  which contain inherent reward for their observance and application or inherent  punishment for their violation, and that in turn determine the outcomes of my  reality.

Secondly, there is subjective reality, which essentially is my life  situation or my life experience. As much as objective reality is  determined by immutable universal laws and principles outside of my control, subjective reality, my life situation and life experience, is  determined by my level of understanding and application of the universal laws  and principles, which is within my control. As mentioned earlier, many people  feel out of control of and a victim to their subjective reality.  However, could it be that I am more responsible for and in control of my life  situation or life experience than what I have been conditioned to believe

Consider the above for a moment. If it is true that objective  reality is determined by immutable universal laws and principles and that subjective reality is determined by my application of these laws and  principles, does that mean that subjective reality is created by me?  Does that mean that there is then no real victim? Can I then still say that life  is unfair? What if I did not know that these laws and principles existed, much  less knew how to apply them correctly?  What if I did not know that I was influencing subjective reality?

Let us consider the questions above. It is important to understand that  ignorance of a law does not nullify the law. Whether or not I am ware of a law,  violating it will still lead to specific  consequences. The biblical statement, “My people are destroyed for a lack of  knowledge” implies that ignorance is never an excuse. Realistically speaking,  the only reason for ignorance is not taking the time gain the information.  Information and knowledge are more readily available now than ever before. The  same biblical principle regarding ignorance implies that ignorance is the result  of a rejection of knowledge. The more I take responsibility for acquiring the  knowledge I need, the less I will suffer the consequences of violating the  universal laws and principles. The result will be experiencing more of the  benefits of correctly applying these laws  and principles.

Another question may be, “What about circumstances, situations and events  that are outside of my control, that were not directly caused by me?” At the  risk of opening up a can of worms and eliciting violent reactions, there are  those that believe that, if not directly created by us, we still attract every  circumstance, situation or event in our lives. Safe to say for now, it is  important to understand that whatever I encounter in my life, I still have the  power as to how I react or respond. Even in these instances there are specific  universal laws and principles that will determine the outcomes or effects of  these on my subjective reality. Either way, I am still responsible, if not for  what happens, then the way in which I experience what happens in my life.  Ultimately, the way I think and consequently feel about what happens in my life  and the value I ascribe, will determine the long-term impact, positive or  negative.

The million dollar question at this stage must be, “What on earth are these  universal laws and principles? How do I apply them?” The next article will deal  with some of the most fundamental laws and principles that have the greatest  impact on our lives. For now, develop the awareness and understanding that in  reality our lives are not simply a series of random and capricious events, but  more a practice, for which we need to take greater responsibility.
